#73 When doing register ask students to say one word to describe how they are feeling

💡 A tip to try in class this week 💡
During one of our monthly podcast chats, Ollie Lovell shared this lovely idea.
When doing the register at the start of the lesson, instead of getting students to respond to their name with a simple yes or here, ask them to respond with one word that tells you how they are feeling today.
Not only is this a bit of fun that gets students thinking and engaged in the lesson, it might also provide you with valuable data:
If a student says they are tired, that might impact whether you decide to Cold Call them early in the lesson.
If a student says they are sad, you might choose to have a quiet word with them later on in the lesson.
If a student says they are happy, try to feed off their positivity.
This technique could also be used in form/tutor time.

I also take the register practising tables or other sequences. Eg: first pupil answers 3, next 6, then 9 etc.
Sequence may increase then decrease.
Sometimes we count in quarters eg: one quarter, a half, three quarters, one, one and a quarter, etc
Loads of possibilities…,
I agree with the sentiment, but why are we spending time calling the register out? When students are working silently on the Do Now, you can take the roll without wasting time or impacting the timing of a lesson.
