Wow- this is so timely for me! I have just started teaching English at an Indonesian vocational high school that receive students from low-income families all over the nation. Those from areas where they received almost no English (though it's required nationally) in middle school are following this exact pattern. I require them to rewrite incorrect sentences correctly the next day, but most of these students don't and then can't do the next day's practice and so goes the cycle. Super interesting to know that it seems to be 'a thing'! I haven't found the solution yet, but just started using class time to reteach small groups while others work on enrichment activities and I'm starting to see some eyes open and a little more effort.
