I agree with the sentiment, but why are we spending time calling the register out? When students are working silently on the Do Now, you can take the roll without wasting time or impacting the timing of a lesson.
I appreciate that this is a thoughtful idea and shows the students that you care. However, I personally would not ask the students to share their mood in front of the entire class and as part of a subject lesson. I think either they will not answer honestly, or be embarrassed to be truly honest, and therefore this would be a bit of a false exercise. And at the beginning of the lesson as a subject teacher, there is not the time to address any concerns if any of the students are upset etc. I feel this kind of conversion should happen when you have the time to genuinely talk about it and respond if necessary. I think lesson time can actually can be a refreshing distraction for students that may be suffering with poor mental health or issues going on in their lives, and a reminder of their feelings at the beginning of every lesson may not necessarily be a good thing.
I also take the register practising tables or other sequences. Eg: first pupil answers 3, next 6, then 9 etc.
Sequence may increase then decrease.
Sometimes we count in quarters eg: one quarter, a half, three quarters, one, one and a quarter, etc
Loads of possibilities…,
That’s nice!
